Getting a Taste of the Porsche Experience in LA

Porsche is opening its newest Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles this week in the hopes of bringing more than the avid car enthusiast into the German-sports-car fold. The 53-acre plot of land in Carson, California, just a few miles from LAX, is Porsche’s fifth Experience Center facility and only its second in the U.S. Porsche hopes the new Experience Center will offer fans of the brand, potential customers and their families, and businesses a place to experience the “core of the Porsche brand.”

Fun with Physics in the Lamborghini’s Advanced Composite Laboratory

A young man wearing a black lab coat with “Prototipi” on the back and a raging bull over the heart is enthusiastically talking about the history of carbon fiber. Behind him a machine flexes a honeycomb panel almost 4 inches before the panel cracks like a gunshot, fracturing but not quite breaking in half. My…

Driving a 1957 Volvo Sport with Volvo’s CEO

It’s been said that everyone has a Volvo story, whether it was growing up in the jumpseats of a 240 station wagon or learning to drive in a friend’s sedan. But Volvo’s own story has been largely silent of late. Delays with announced vehicles and the transition to a new Chinese owner have kept the…

First Drive: Mercedes-Benz GLS

Time takes its pound of flesh from everyone. Butts sag, jowls wobble, bellies bubble over their beltlines, and while we are all flesh and bone, sometimes we feel compelled for help in fighting gravity’s pull. It’s as true for humans as it is for automobiles and the 2017 Mercedes-Benz full-size SUV has just undergone…

For years, a Cold War-style stand-off has kept super-luxury automakers from treading on each other’s domain, with ambition limited by resources. That fragile peace has been shattered, and let history show it was Bentley which fired the first missile. The 2016 Bentley Bentayga makes the phrase “Bentley SUV” a credible reality—and gives Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz…

First Drive: The Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Coupe

What happens when you stitch the head of a lion onto the body of an eagle? A whole lot of not-good, just ask the Greeks. Trying to do too many things at once—and trying too hard at it—is often a recipe for disaster. While the GLE450 AMG isn’t a misbegotten science experiment, it’s still not…

First Drive: Mercedes-Benz GLC

American enthusiasts are finally getting one of their deepest desires, and it only took a former engineer for the CERN atomic particle accelerator project to get it done. Sure, the wagon may go under a different name, and ride a little high, but it’s a wagon (just squint), and it’s coming at the end of…

The Lincoln Continental Makes a Comeback

At the New York Auto Show unveilings abound. One that was particularly special–and particularly controversial was the revitalization of the Continental nameplate by Lincoln, the beleaguered American luxury brand. I had a chance to check out the car before it hit the show floor and wrote about it for Yahoo! Autos. Check out my piece…

Burnouts in a Bentley Mulsanne Speed

Yep, you read that right….. On a trip to Austin, Texas I had the chance to take the big brawler out for a spin and write about it for Yahoo Autos. Check out the story, in which I discuss Derek Bell, cows and burnouts, over at Yahoo! Autos.

The new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT unveiled in Germany

I had a chance to head to Stuttgart, Germany the home of many a famed German automaker and see the unveiling of the all new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT–only the second car completely developed in house by AMG. It was a fantastic event, and I wrote all about it for Yahoo! Autos. Check out my story…
